For those who don't know - the Follow Unfollow Method is when you follow people on Instagram with the intention of having them follow you back out of courtesy/interest/or obligation if it's as a result of a 'Follow Everyone!' thread. Then you unfollow them afterwards. This is generally done at scale.
>> Personally I don’t recommend or like the follow unfollow method and here's why:
It can def result in growth but it generally results in predominantly UNENGAGED growth.
For example - say you may get an extra 100 followers but a good portion of them aren't actually interested in you or your product/biz/page so they don’t engage with any of your content ... This then adversely affects your engagement rate which affects the algorithm that applies to your organic reach and sometimes any collab opportunities you might want to line up (if they’re smart, anyone looking at collaborating with you will check out your engagement rate (how many of your audience interact with your content) as well as your vanity metrics (who ‘follows’ your account).
Secondly, insta ads (unless you choose the audience) and the algorithm in part also look at who your current following is to determine who else to show your posts to (because they think the people following you are your actual tribe/niche/target audience) ... if you’ve diluted the waters with randoms then - that affects things.
Thirdly, some people use apps or growth companies to do their following/unfollowing for them and, if they're doing this too much per day, it can flag a warning with instagram and could result in your account being suspended or worse. They may also be following accounts who have absolutely nothing to do with your niche or target audience so 100% of the return follows will have no benefit to your biz apart from being vanity booting.
Most importantly tho, at the end of the day, your vanity metrics do not necessarily correlate to conversions or sales or money in the bank. I’ve seen people with 1,500 Insta followers who are making 6 figures+ online and, I’ve seen people with 20K Insta followers who aren’t making anything. Sure - we all want a million followers because it’s gratifying BUT it’s better to have 10 engaged followers who love your stuff and will buy your things than 10,000 followers who are just sitting there.
So, follow people and pages YOU love and ask people to follow your page IF they actually resonate with it.
This pic is of me with my BFF who is an incredible Side Hustle coach and entrepreneur ... We like and follow all of each other’s stuff because we genuinely want to and because we actually love what each other are posting. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to know that your entire following was soul led like that?!?
